First time in a rain shelter

Rain fell all around him in great heavy drops as he gazed up with uncertain eyes at the grey sky far, far above.
He had run into that little, alcove, that niche in the stone Cliffside for protection. 
He held his breath and listened.
Listened for voices.
For the sound of breaking branches, crunching leaves, anything at all. 
He was still panting and his clothes were still damp from sweat and the warm tropical rain.
The little seven year old was not in that niche seeking shelter from the rain.
He was there hiding from something far, far more dangerous...
...a man with a gun.
A man who had just tried to kill him...
